Open Source Software: What Is It? Is It Right for Your Organization?

Learn:

  • Open Source vs. Closed Source: the pro’s and con’s
  • Choosing what’s right for you organization

Sometimes, the most obvious choice in software isn’t always the best choice in terms of cost and productivity. Sometimes there’s a ‘not so commercial’ product that can get the job done better, faster and cheaper. Take advantage of what’s out there and be aware of your options.

Watch and learn how open source software can be competitive and operate just as effectively as commercial products. We will demonstrate, educate and empower you to make better technology choices for your organization.

Watch as we demonstrate some of the more common Open Source tools such as Open Office and The Gimp graphics tool. You’ll soon discover that there are some exciting, cheaper alternatives to the software packages that may cost hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Particpants in this event will get an overview of what Open Source Software is by David Pool, News4Neighbors. Then, they'll have the opportunity to visit three of the booths below during the breakout sessions.

Among the presenters:

Matt Blair, Technology Director for Humaninet will explain how HumaniNet is using Plone, an open source content management system, to streamline their web publishing process, share documents and links internally, and create workspaces for joint projects with other organizations. The presentation will also include an overview of the custom workflow they have developed within Plone, a demonstration of how to create and manage documents within the system, and a brief summary of the resources HumaniNet has created to help other non-profits use Plone and assess how it might benefit their organizations.

Please see the link below for the full list of presenters.
